what makes you feel alive?

I was sitting at my gate waiting to catch a flight home after an amazing trip to LA when a friend suggested I read my favourite blogger’s most recent post to pass the time, in which she poses the question “what makes you feel alive?”.  The perfect thing to contemplate on my flight home, here’s my shot at answering (with inspiration from other readers’ comments)…

(This is a working list)

  • taking bike rides on cool evenings along the seawall
  • the first 12 hours in a new city
  • AND the second visit to a city I love and the anticipation of visiting the places that I have such fond memories of (which I sort of got to experience this past weekend)
  • swimming in ocean water that is just slightly cooler than the air
  • phone calls with my best friends
  • ice cream!!!
  • having one of those amazing, ‘I’m killing it’ days at work OR getting in the zone and not realizing I’d been working for 3 hours straight
  • watching movies on the couch with my head on someone’s shoulder
  • ripe peaches

  • music that fits my mood (& any live music)

  • perusing a perfectly curated local shop

  • “coincidences”/synchronicities – ex. a text alert from someone at the exact moment I was thinking about him/her

  • giving gifts and the look on someone’s face when I give them a gift they genuinely love
  • roses at nose height
  • a vista! standing at the edge of a cliff looking out across the great wide open, or peering out of an airplane window (happening right now)
  • when a bad mood suddenly breaks…
  • freshly laundered sheets (and PJs)
  • getting a glimpse of the “New Yorker” cover in my mailbox (thank you Tony!!)
  • that moment of sitting down right after I’ve cleaned my apartment
  • dramatic night time storms when I am already in bed
  • quiet meals alone (at home or at a restaurant) with delicious food and a good read (did this just before boarding my flight)
  • finding a pair of jeans that makes my butt look goooooood OR finding the perfect jumpsuit (I’ve been v lucky as of late)
  • attending and presenting in board meetings (I am a 26 year old female and am always the youngest in the room and many times the only female… I like proving people wrong)
  • standing up for other people
  • having really fun sex worth thinking about for the next week
  • the feeling riiiiiiight before a kiss
  • impressing myself w/silly feats (making a tight connecting flight; making waffles for friends and not messing them up)
  • conversations that last way late into the night
  • finishing a good, hard workout, and walking home with a cool breeze out
  • thinking about being a mom some day
  • a bubble bath lit by candle light
  • savasana after a long yoga practice
  • the sound of someone I really love saying my full first name
  • hearing a great song for the first time (like in the background of a movie) and listening to a little snippet again and again until I can discern enough of the lyrics to Google it – and then finding it, listening to the whole thing, and loving it
  • a walk at dusk (golden hour) (preferably when it stays light out til 8pm) when no one has shut their curtains yet but the lights are on so I can decide which house I’d choose to live in
  • finishing a race (half & full marathons)
  • train travel (through Europe, Japan, even the VIA rail)
  • encountering a friendly kitty while walking around the neighbourhood
  • getting a letter or package from a friend across the country
  • lists like this!
